Will taxpayers bail out the Democrat primary mess?

The Democratic presidential primary in Florida has been a mess. Now the taxpayers may be called on to pay for the party’s actions.

Last year, the Florida legislature decided to move the state’s presidential primary to January 29, 2008 - too early for party rules. The Republicans decided to punish the state by taking away half of its delegates at the convention. The Democrats decided to take away all of the state’s delegates and to prohibit campaigning here.

On January 29th, Hillary Rodham Clinton easily carried the state. Now, with Senator Clinton and Illinois Senator Barak Obama fighting for every delegate, the Florida delegates are suddenly important. Clinton called for Florida’s delegates to be counted back in January.

Now, Governor Charlie Crist, a Republican, says he would support holding the primary a second time. Democratic National Chair Howard Dean says he might favor the idea.

Trouble is, the taxpayers of Florida pay for primary elections. The Democrats got themselves into this mess. Should the taxpayer bail them out?

Update - Rick Moran looks at both the Florida a Michigan primaries.
